The Boe Rigg Campsite, Bellingham Northumberland

The Boe Rigg Campsite, Bellingham Northumberland

The Boe Rigg campsite – a good stop for overlanding and having an open fire next to your camp

When it comes to overlanding there is no doubt that the UK is pretty restrictive especally when it comes to camping. On of the things that attracted us to The Boe Rigg, a campsite situated between Bellingham and Kielder in Northumberland was the fact that they allow a fire pit. If you don’t have one of your own you can hire one.

The Boe Rigg is a working farm so dogs need to be lept on the lead and you will see why shortly after arrival when the local feathered residents will pay you a visit on the hunt for craps of food.

The site itself is in a rural location so you can expect the full brunt of good old Northumberland weather. Pitches are a very good size and there are plenty with no electric hookup if, like us you prefer to remain self sufficient.

The site is very well kept and is also very popular so it pays to book in advance especially in the holidays/half term etc. There is much more to The Boe Rigg than simply camping but for our two day break it was perfect for a short overland adventure, a pleasant change from life abroad where in reality we couldn’t use the Petromax Atago because of fire risk and over excitable forest rangers…

Being able to use an open fire for cooking added what had been missing from our overlanding adventures so far so camp grounds like this one are well worth bookmarking for future reference.

Services are a good and clean so no complaints there and while you always get one bunch of rowdy individuals our stay at The Boe Rigg was a peacefull one albeit a little on the wet side thanks to the UK weather!

Overall we’d highly recommend this site for anyone overlanding or seeking a more genuine camping experience.
